HISTORY
The first Europeans to see inland areas of California is the Spanish Portola Expedition. They travelled north through Sepulveda pass into the San Fernando Valley and stayed few nights at a native village near present-day Los Encino’s State Historic Park. The valley was then named ‘El Valle de Santa Catalina de Bolonia de Los Encino’s’ by a Franciscan missionary (Fray Juan Crespi) traveling with the expedition. Later all of the Crespi’s name was dropped except ‘Encino’.

In 1845, Rancho Los Encino’s (Ranch of Holm Oaks) was established when a large parcel of former Mission San Fernando was granted to three Mission Indians by Governor Pio Pico. After the beginning of the secularization of the California mission in 1834, many of the ranchos were created and Encino derived its name from the rancho.
